Description
Set sometime shortly before the onset of the French Revolution; probably around mid-1788, early 1789 at the very latest.
Anyway, this is Benoite. Her and her husband (who at the moment is nameless because I haven't bothered to think up a suitable name for him yet) were very very much agains the whole Revolution, and were even considering fleeing to Vienna or somesuch place, like the rest of the émigrés*. Members of the Second Estate (nobility), they wanted Louis XVI back on the throne. (Even though Marie Antoinette's wardrobe probably dug the whole country deeper into debt.
) If any of you are familiar with the Revolution and its' outcome, you will know that, ultimately, Benoite didn't get her wish of Louis being permanently back on the throne.
Anyway, on to the picture. I've been looking at paintings from different decades in the Enlightenment, and watching how fashion changed. In the 1770-1780s, fashion was big hair. Ooh, how I hated doing that wig. XP Didn't even turn out the way I'd wanted it to. But that's all right; at least it vaguely looks like a wig.
The dress is all right, though I was getting so frustrated choosibng a colour. (I would have done white and then a simple coloured sash; that always seems to look nice, but I wanted the lace on the fichu** to show up, and it I did a white dress, you wouldn't be able to see it). Anyway, after much deliberation, I finally chose that colour. The sash was another thing; I'd wanted to do a red sash, but that didn't really look good. x_X So I chose the orange colour. Blecch. Next time I draw her, I'm drawing her in something different. I am really proud of how the folds on the skirt turned out, though.
Background, as a whole, turned out well, in my opinion. Not much else to say, since this comment is long enough as it is.
* émigrés - Nobles that fled France during the Revolution to go to more conservative European countries
** fichu - The lacy scarf she's wearing around her neckline. It was used to fill in or cover low necklines on dresses
