Description

Wow. That's about all I can say right now, even if it doesn't really sum up what I'm feeling. It's weird to think this is a redraw of a nine year old picture, if only because it doesn't feel like I've been doing this whole 'art' thing for nine years, but I have been. (Actually 10, I think, but I only started uploading stuff to here in 2003; everything before that was on a MediaMiner account that I'm sure is lost to the ages now...a pity, but what can you do?)

So this is ~erin-hime's Desdemona Starleaf Hesperos, a minor villain in her story Finding Fate The Gatekeeper. I can't even begin to describe the changes to the story from the time of the original picture and now, not without overwhelming people, but let's just say that Desdemona went from being a princess-raised-by-peasants (she was switched at birth with Persephone Porter for reasons that I, sadly, can't remember; the Porters raised Desdemona, and the Starleafs raised Persephone) to just being a princess (of a completely different kingdom than the one Persephone is from now -- no longer are they from the same dimension!), and a snobbish one at that. The more things change...;P

I don't think any words can really do justice to the amount of change my style's taken in nearly a decade, but it's interesting to see that I can portray Desdemona a little more accurately now than I did then -- I keep getting the sneaking suspicion that while I made her chest the right size (that size being huge), that I made her too plump overall. I don't think so, but I don't know how plump she's supposed to be. I was pleasantly surprised at how quickly this came about though; there was incredibly little fiddling or difficulty in sketching, and the result turned out very well.

Of course, I think that's because I actually take the time to rough things out, rather than just draw a head and work from there like I used to -- no scribbling out a rough or anything to make corrections before I got too deep into it, I just did it, following a pretty basic template each time. I'm sure a lot of people, just starting out, have done the same thing, but that doesn't mean it's right (as you can see by the anatomy in that first image). I'm not even sure if I can compare the two, since this is so different from my other redraws thanks to the huge amount of time between pictures. it's not like you can look at it and say "oh yes, the anatomy and colouring is better than before," not when the everything is better than before. (I'm aware that sentence made no sense. >.O)

So maybe I'm just a little too easily impressed, but I definitely like how this turned out. I'm still not sure if I can adequately express my amazement at the difference between pictures, so I won't. This picture, on its' own, is pretty nice, and you definitely get a good sense of the character from it (stilted pose and all :P). But when compared to the first one? Yeah, no words for it.

I hope you like this, ~erin-hime!

You know what’s really sad? When you mentioned that you were redoing a Gatekeeper piece, this didn’t come to mind. Sure, you have limited stock, but I thought of all the others you’ve done. So, like last time, I was like ‘no, not Des!’ when I saw this, before sort of laughing at myself for forgetting this. After all, it’s sort of where I stole her outfit from. And don’t be so impressed that it’s been nine years since you drew the first one. After all, Des has had a variant of that outfit you designed for nine years as well. That’s impressive. (I know I’ve been drawing for about thirteen years now, since my earliest stuff is from 1999, so…yeah.)

Ha ha ha, I kept wanting to call Des Des Starleaf in the story, I’m so bad. How the hell I would want to do that is beyond me, but there you go. But yeah, it’s surprising how much the story’s changed in the last nine years. The original idea was pretty interesting…except for the fact that I doubt Persephone would have been kicked out upon discovery. After all, she’s been training to be a princess her whole life, whereas Des is just a peasant. (Her mother wanted a better life for Persephone, which is why she switched them). But still, interesting idea that evolved to the story that it is today, and I like it where it is, I have to be honest. It makes way more sense now. :D (I think, honestly, Des is the only one who hasn’t changed from the original version, ha!)

You act like starting with the head and bsing your way through the picture is a bad thing. >.> (I have yet to learn, sadly.) But yeah, seeing the difference in the pictures is amazing. Then again, you were just starting with the realistic style back then, and you’ve had nine years to prefect it, so it’s not surprising. There’s something wanky about her anatomy here, I agree, and I think it might be because you made her chest too big, actually. :shrug: She is supposed to be plump, so you got that right, at least. :D But yeah, I was surprised to see this done last night, to be honest, since I expected it to take at least another day. ^^;

What I think is amazing about this is the fact that this is a redo of the first FF picture you’ve done for me. :D So that means you’ve been doing art for this story on and off for almost ten years…and the bulk of it’s been the last few months, ha! But yeah, given the fact that there isn’t much, having that much space between the redos isn’t that surprising. But it’s awesome, anyway. I think you need to put them in a picture side by side so we can really see the difference. :D (Or find some really, really old art, and redo it, and we can be amazed at it even more. >.>)

But yesh, this turned out beautifully, and don’t worry; I’m easily impressed as well. ;P I have no problems with a Gatekeeper era Des picture, and I agree that you captured the character perfectly. God only knows what she’s plotting here. >.> Can’t be good, that’s for sure. But I love this, and I’m glad I got to watch it being made this time. And get to see the difference in your style as a bonus!
