Sketchbook Express: Sedgwick Sketch

Description

General Sedgwick really is the last guy you'd expect fan art of, because genocidal, racist, misogynist, condescending, disloyal, bastard old men don't exactly make great subjects to draw. (Seriously, Genetic Origins made me actrually hate Sedgwick so much for what he did to his own family. Like, that's lower than low.)

But up until that revelation, I actually...didn't like Sedgwick, but was kinda fascinated by him. I tend to do that with a lot of villains, actually -- I don't make excuses for them, but there's something fascinating about seeing them work, why they do what they do, how they justify it, etc., etc. Up until then Sedgwick seemed interesting simply because he didn't (necessarily) subscribe to the doctrine that COSMOS secretly practised -- it's just tha when you tell him to do something, he will ensure that it's done well, and so he went along with it because the research proved useful, even if he didn't care about the reasons behind it. Why? Because those were his orders, and he is a good soldier.  But then we find out he doesn't even have loyalty to his own family and sent off his own granddaughter for the sake of research and any shred of sympathy or fascination I had is gone, because who does that?? :P

But I just randomly felt like drawing him. I picture him with very sharp, angular features -- square jaw, a sharp nose, and a lot of wrinkles, probably from frowning in disapproval so much or...something. Also drawing older people can kinda be a challenge sometimes, which is why I wanted to try it. I also experimented with his hair a bit -- erin-hime's portrayed it as just kinda short all over, like a buzz cut, I assume? Meanwhile, I went for something like a fade because that's a classic military haircut and seemed like the sort of thing he'd do. You can't really tell in a sketch though, especially since everything is buzzed short.

I'm pretty sure his head is out of proportion with his body, which...kinda sucks. I was more focused on the face. But uh...enjoy, erin-hime? Probably not the character you expected. :P

Hee hee, he might be the villain, and might be a terrible person to boot, but I sorta need art of this monster, so I actually don't mind that you did art of him!  I mean, I have a hard time drawing him, because I don't do old people very well.  But you do old much better, so I'm glad to have this.  :D

I think it's funny, because at times when I have him talking, I'm sort of like...what the hell am I doing?  Because he's spouting out all these weird COSMOS ideals that he shouldn't technically have, because like you said, he doesn't actually believe in a lot of them.  To be honest, if anyone asked about that after I published that, considering it seems like he did a one-eighty from GE, I'd probably just say he was blowing stream at that point in order to look like he did support the cause.  The misogynist comments are all him, though.  But apparently what makes him a monster is selling out his own granddaughter, ha!  He just seemed like the sort of guy.  Oh, you need more test subjects?  I have one I don't need.  Hear ya go!  ;P

I'm not sure how I see him, actually, other than an old military man, so I suppose being angular...works?  I like it, in any case.  Just like I like hte hair.  This is fairly accurate of how I see his hair, very militaryish, so...awesome.  I'd imagine the shaved parts are white/grey, and the top would be his usual color.  I like.

I have no problem with random characters like this!  I need more for my individual galleries, after all.  :D
