Free hosting recommendations?

Mon Jun 8, 2009, 4:00 PM
Callisto-chan wrote a journal?! How shocking!

No, seriously, I thought it was high time I got that year-old journal off the front page. I got used to seeing it after so long; now I’ll be surprised every time I see it just because there’s something else there. :P

Anyway, to make a long story short, I’m considering moving to a new host, as my current one, Fateback isn’t what it used to be. It was great when I initially signed up, but now I’m getting tired of it. I mean, I’ve mentioned before to people that ads bother me, but their initial design (a little bar at the top of the screen) was relatively subtle. Now they added some more banners and it’s not so subtle. Add to that a 200 KB file size limit, which was very annoying when I wanted to upload images, and an annoying tendency to reroute broken Fateback links to an ad page than a simple 404 error (and heaven knows if that ad page doesn’t have something worse lurking in the code), and I’m thinking maybe I should try something new.

I was wondering if any of you had any free hosts you would recommend – I’m not using it for anything fancy, just your basic HTML pages and images, so I’m not worried about what kind of scripts it can run and all that stuff -- if it's got FTP, I'm good. Any switching of hosts would be a while away anyway, but I’d rather get a head start on searching. I might not switch at all if I don’t find something I like.

For what it’s worth, my current host offers 60 MB of space (which, at one point, I thought I had gone over) and is generally good about uptime (there was a period of time a few years back where it was frequently down, but the problem rarely cropped up besides that), so if there are any hosts out there with at least those two qualities I’d be happy. Ideally the file-size limit would be a little larger too, but I can work with 200 KB. ;P

So I’m open to suggestions. I prefer hearing about people’s experiences with a host because it gives me a better idea of what it’s like rather than reading relatively anonymous testimonials. Do you have a preferred host, or is there one you generally had good experiences with? What was it like?

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

Helping an artist in great need

News of this seems to have spread like wildfire through the Tower of Time forums, and is coming on to DA as well. I thought the least I could do was spread the word, even just a little bit.

The basics of this is that ~GloryAngel, a rather well-known artist in the SM community, suffered a car accident back in October of last year. As a result of that, she has been diagnosed with 'locked in' syndrome; the basics of this means that she is completely paralyzed though her mind, memories, etc. are all fully intact.

Like I said, the least I can do is spread the word a little further -- if you want to know more, donate, or what-have-you, I'll redirect you:

Links of Interest
*sakky-attack has more information in her journal, which includes methods of donating to a trust fund. As well, she is offering commissions, the proceeds of which go directly to the trust fund.

=Jateshi is also offering 'trust fund commissions' at her journal and asks that you spread the word if you can.

Sara's Courage has links about the condition, articles about her struggle, and a link to the blog.

Sara's Status is a blog written by family and friends that give updates on Sara's current condition.

I know I don't have a very large influence here, and by now people watching me might have already heard of this -- but still, for the people that haven't, I felt like this should be heard. It's the least I can do.

The first 5 people who comment on this journal will get a sketch, free. However, in return, you must offer 5 free sketches in your own journal. If you've already done 5 Free Sketches, simply link the journal entry in your comment... You still qualify.

01 - I will NOT draw your request until I see this in your journal.
02 - In your comment, include a link to a reference picture of the character you want me to draw.
03 - Only one character per person- Remember, this is FREE.

These are really going to be linearts rather than actual sketches. I assure you, you don't want to see my sketches.

Have fun with this, it's a great way to pass your talents to your fans!

First off, Happy New Year, everyone! I hope everyone's year turns out great for them. :D

This really isn't much, but I've been in a drawing mood lately and thought I'd kick off the new year by offering more art trades. The rules are simple -- it's on a first-come, first-serve basis, and I will draw a head for a head (that is, if you want me to draw two characters you must draw me two characters).

So you know in advance, I'd like it if you drew a character from my site, and we can work out what you'd like me to draw through notes. Just comment here to reserve a spot. :)

DA Remix at Jateshi's journal

=Jateshi has decided to try doing a remix for the members of DA. A remix is essentially where two people are paired together and redraw a picture from the others' gallery. It's quite fun, especially to see the style differences between each artist. :)

Jateshi provides more information at her journal, so you can go there if you just want to know more or to sign up. Sign ups end on July 7, this coming Friday, so you have a week left!
