Free hosting recommendations?

Mon Jun 8, 2009, 4:00 PM
Callisto-chan wrote a journal?! How shocking!

No, seriously, I thought it was high time I got that year-old journal off the front page. I got used to seeing it after so long; now I’ll be surprised every time I see it just because there’s something else there. :P

Anyway, to make a long story short, I’m considering moving to a new host, as my current one, Fateback isn’t what it used to be. It was great when I initially signed up, but now I’m getting tired of it. I mean, I’ve mentioned before to people that ads bother me, but their initial design (a little bar at the top of the screen) was relatively subtle. Now they added some more banners and it’s not so subtle. Add to that a 200 KB file size limit, which was very annoying when I wanted to upload images, and an annoying tendency to reroute broken Fateback links to an ad page than a simple 404 error (and heaven knows if that ad page doesn’t have something worse lurking in the code), and I’m thinking maybe I should try something new.

I was wondering if any of you had any free hosts you would recommend – I’m not using it for anything fancy, just your basic HTML pages and images, so I’m not worried about what kind of scripts it can run and all that stuff -- if it's got FTP, I'm good. Any switching of hosts would be a while away anyway, but I’d rather get a head start on searching. I might not switch at all if I don’t find something I like.

For what it’s worth, my current host offers 60 MB of space (which, at one point, I thought I had gone over) and is generally good about uptime (there was a period of time a few years back where it was frequently down, but the problem rarely cropped up besides that), so if there are any hosts out there with at least those two qualities I’d be happy. Ideally the file-size limit would be a little larger too, but I can work with 200 KB. ;P

So I’m open to suggestions. I prefer hearing about people’s experiences with a host because it gives me a better idea of what it’s like rather than reading relatively anonymous testimonials. Do you have a preferred host, or is there one you generally had good experiences with? What was it like?

Thanks in advance for your help. :)

How much space do you need?
:iconcallisto-chan:
At least 60 MB; up until recently that much space was usually enough for what I needed. I understand though if places offering that much or more are hard to come by. :\

I have space...
:iconcallisto-chan:
How very generous of you. :D I thank you for your offer. Like I said earlier, I won't be needing space right away; there's still quite a bit to do before I can consider updating the site (the estimate I'm giving myself is the end of June/early July).

Since I don't want to rush into anything too soon, would it be all right if I kept you in mind should I have trouble finding something else? Please don't take offense; I'm just in the 'looking around' phase at the moment, seeing what is out there before I consider moving.
